Weight Loss Treatment (Semaglutide)

What is Semaglutide?

Many of us struggle with weight loss despite all our hard work. Fortunately, the FDA has approved semaglutide, a prescription medication for weight loss. Semaglutide works by suppressing your appetite, so you eat less without feeling hungry or unsatisfied. Research has demonstrated that this treatment works to help people lose significant amounts of weight. Unlike some former weight loss medications, semaglutide works safely to achieve weight loss with fewer side effects.

Learn more about Semaglutide

Originally approved as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, semaglutide is a prescription treatment for weight loss. It works by triggering the production of a hormone called a glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1). This hormone has several effects important to weight loss:

  • Signals your body to release insulin
  • Helps sugars move out of your bloodstream and into your tissues
  • Regulates appetite
  • Controls blood sugar levels to decrease hunger
  • Keeps your stomach feeling full longer

When injected, semaglutide tells your body to make more GLP-1. This hormone causes your body to release insulin. The increased insulin production removes more sugar from your bloodstream. With your body using sugars more efficiently, your brain receives fewer signals telling it to eat more. As a result, people can lose 15-20% of their body weight while taking semaglutide.

The FDA has approved semaglutide for those who are overweight, obese, or even extremely obese. It has fewer side effects than previous weight loss medications and can be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program. Taking part in a weight loss program will improve and help maintain your progress.

At Care Nashville, we use semaglutide as part of our weight loss program. This program includes:

  • A series of lab tests include hormone levels, A1C, and liver function tests
  • Keeping a food log to become more conscious of your eating habits
  • 150 minutes of exercise per week, including strength training
  • 8 hours of sleep per night (poor sleep triggers hormones that cause hunger)
  • Injections containing semaglutide and L-carnitine

L-carnitine acts to transform fat into energy, helping you burn fat and benefit more from exercise. It works well in combination with semaglutide. You will receive 10 units of semaglutide by injection during the first week. If you do not have problems with side effects, this will increase to 20 and then 30 units.

Side effects of semaglutide include digestive issues such as nausea and acid reflux. You may notice other effects like low blood pressure, headaches, and dizziness. Most people find their side effects minor and do not need to stop taking semaglutide.

If you are interested in our weight loss plan, a consultation is scheduled so we can determine whether you are a good candidate for semaglutide. Ideal candidates for this program have committed to using all the available tools to achieve their desired results. People who follow the program, including semaglutide, see excellent results and learn healthier weight management skills.

You are  not a good candidate if you have type 1 diabetes or other medical conditions like thyroid cancer. Semaglutide might not be right for those with kidney disease. You might not be able to use semaglutide as part of your plan if you experience severe side effects.
